If you’ve been following me for a while on Instagram and Facebook, you will have seen that I always start a design project with a Vision Board.
Vision boards, in my opinion, are one of the most important components early on in the design process. Why? Well, there are two reasons:
The vision board ensures that I am on the right track in terms of the style you are after for when I start designing and making your selections
It keeps you on track and focussed on what you want as well. It’s so easy to keep going down the rabbit hole of Pinterest, Instagram and design magazines which will just cause you a lot of confusion. The vision board helps to centre you back to what you are wanting to achieve.
How to get started?
Before you start looking at inspo pics on Pinterest, Instagram, magazines, etc, ask yourself some important questions first:
What would my dream home look like? Maybe there’s a particular style you like, such as ‘Coastal’ or ‘Hamptons’
How do I want my home to make me feel – when you come home from a busy day at work, how do you want to feel as you come into your house
How do you live in the house? Maybe you work from home, or perhaps you practice yoga at home. You may want the kids to have their own play and study area. Jot these down to include in your imagery.
What are my must haves? Maybe it is an open plan kitchen, living, dining area. Make a note of these must haves so you can include imagery in your vision board.
Start to bring your vision to life
Once I’ve got these answers from my clients, I start to create a Pinterest Board. You can create your dream home Pinterest Board, and using some of the key terms you’ve jotted down in your answers, start searching and pinning items that align with what you are wanting to achieve. You can also do basic web searches, check out designers you love to follow, and look at magazines. You can create copies of those to add to your vision board.
Narrow it all down
You may find that you have gone waaaaay down the rabbit hole, so sit back and have a look at all your images and start finding ones that match. Narrow them down until you have up to about 10 images that reflect everything you are after.
Create your vision board
I like to use Canva to create my vision boards. If you haven’t used Canva, it is an easy-to-use graphic design app with loads of pre-made templates you can just drag and drop your images into. I like to use some key words in my vision board as well that replicates the look and feel I am wanting to achieve, ie Coastal, Calm, Modern. I create my board in A3 size so it’s a decent size when it’s printed.
Once you are completely happy that your vision board reflects the answers you made above, print it out and keep it handy as you are renovating or restyling. My clients even take it with them when shopping for furniture to show the stores the style they are going for. It is also good to keep it somewhere you can see all the time, so that when you become a little overwhelmed when your friends and family come at you with all their opinions on what they think you should do, you can chill out and refer back to what you have already created.
And that’s it…
All you need to do now is answer the questions about what you are wanting to achieve, start pulling together inspo pics from the sources you like going to, narrow them down and create your own vision board.
