How to plan your room layout

Updated: Jul 27, 2021

Do you hear the term spatial planning but don’t really understand what it means? Before a designer can design a kitchen renovation or select furniture for a room, we need to know the dimensions of the space so we know what we’re dealing with. Have you ever ordered furniture for your house only to get it in and find it’s way too big? That’s where spatial planning comes in.

Measure once, then measure again

Let’s say you are wanting to buy new furniture for your lounge room. In your mind you’re thinking a modular sofa, arm chairs, coffee table, side table and entertaining unit. Take accurate measurements of the room, including doors and windows, before you purchase anything and sketch it out using a scale ruler or a floor planner app. If you have recently purchased your home, you may be able to grab the floor plan from the real estate agent or even from the real estate listing on-line.

Circulation Space

As you start finding pieces of furniture you like, draw them into your sketch to scale. When doing this you need to consider circulation space around the furniture – can you comfortably move between the coffee table and the sofa, is the furniture directly in the road of a walkway? Think about how you move through the space and be sure nothing is getting in your way or in an annoying position for you.

Proportion

Make sure the scale and proportion of the furniture looks balanced in the room and that the room isn’t looking too cluttered. Sketch the size of your rug in as well to be sure it’s not too small or too large for the space. You will want the rug to sit a few inches at least beneath your sofa.

Don't forget services!

When drawing out your space, be sure to make a note of where existing services are such as power points, TV antenna point and light switches. If you're not planning on moving any of these items, then you will need to make sure that the entertaining unit is going where the existing TV point is and any table lamps have access to power points.
